Coloring with Copic Markers
I finally had a chance to sit down and put together this Copic "Ciao" tutorial today. Since I do not own a video camera, I've put together the slide show below. Note that the slides are labeled with an "Alpha" or "Step" number. Below the slide show, I have composed the step by step directions for you to follow, along with product information and marker colors. Enjoy this tutorial!
A: Supplies
Rubber Stamp: Penny Black – Chic-a-dee Blossoms 202K
Memento Tuxedo Black Ink Pad
Georgia Pacific Cardstock (purchased at Wal-Mart)
Foam Pad – for a clear stamped image
Piece of paper to protect table area
B: Ink Stamp – Turn stamp upside down and ink stamp. Use foam pad under paper and press rubber stamp image onto white cardstock.
C: Stamped Image – You should have a clear stamped image if you use the foam pad. The trip is that the foam pad gives a bit while a hard table top does not. You will find that you will obtain a clear stamped image every time if you use the foam pad. You can also use a computer mouse pad with great results. Also, make sure that your ink pad is not dried out. You may also want to purchase a re-inker for your Memento Black Ink Pad.

F: Select Markers – Copic “Ciao” Marker Colors for the leaves on the Blooms, lightest to darkest:
BG10 Cool Shadow
BG15 Aqua
BG49 Duck Blue
G: Select Markers – Copic “Ciao” Marker Colors for the Blooms, lightest to darkest:
RV21 Light Pink
RV23 Pure Pink
RV04 Shock Pink
RV29 Crimson
For shading around completed image: BV31 Pale Lavender
H: All Copic “Ciao” Markers Used – Usually you will need from 2 to 3-4 shades of one color. A light shade, a medium shade, and a dark shade. All three to four shades are used and blended together to achieve depth and shadows as you color in your stamped images. While I am using “Ciao” Markers, Copic also makes the regular “Sketch” markers. The only difference between the two is that the “Sketch” markers have a barrel shape (in the picture note YR21 and BV31). "Sketch" markers also contain more ink than the “Ciao” markers, come in additional colors as well as all the “Ciao” marker colors, and cost much more than the “Ciao” markers. If you want to try out Copics, I would suggest starting with a few basic colors and purchase 3 shades of each as noted above.
Step 1: Color in the Chic-a-dee bodies and faces with E00 Skin White using circular motions. Stay just inside of the stamped ink edges.
Step 2: Using E21 Baby Skin Pink, apply color to the Chic-a-dee body areas of the stamped image where the artist has added accents to indicate shading.
Step 3: Go back to your E00 marker and go over the areas you colored with E21. Again, using circular motions, you will find that E00 will blend in the areas you colored with E21.
Step 4: Now use E33 Sand and again go over the areas of the Chic-a-dee bodies where the stamped areas indicate shading. If it helps, place a cup or an object on the right or left of your stamped image to remind you of where the light is coming from. For instance, in the above slide, the light is coming from the right and the darker shaded areas are on the left side. Go back to E21 and blend in the areas you accented with E33 using circular motions.
Step 5: Last step, using E37 Sepia, apply accents to the shaded areas. Go back to E33 and blend in these areas lightly using circular motions.
Step 6: You will begin to notice that each of the markers have been blended into one another creating depth and dimension. Practice makes perfect. After trying this a few times, you will be a pro!!! Just remember to start with your lightest marker and work towards your darker shade, blending as you go with the previous shade.
Step 7: Turn your cardstock over. You will know that you have done a good job blending your marker colors, light to dark, when you see that the markers have saturated through the cardstock onto the back side. Remember to place down a piece of paper to protect your table top when coloring in your designs with Copic markers!!!
Step 8: I used a Staedtler triplus fineliner in dark brown to line the Chic-a-dee’s toes that are wrapped around the branch of the blossoms. Don’t forget to color in the branch with the same four marker colors used for the Chic-a-dee bodies, using the same technique as in steps 1-6. You can also color in the Chic-a-dee beaks starting with YR21 Cream, then accenting with YR16 Apricot, going back over with YR21 to blend in.
Step 9: Another tip! Even though the stamped image came out clear, sometimes I like to fill in areas where the ink may not have stamped as dark as I would have liked. I use a Copic “Ciao” marker in C7 Cool Gray which seems to blend into the Memento Tuxedo Black inked image nicely.
Step 10: Notice the difference after using C7 Cool Gray on the Chic-a-dee’s heads to fill in the black inked areas. Nice! Now it is time to color in the leaves. Starting with BG10 Cool Shadow, color in circular motions, staying inside of the inked outline edges.
Step 11: Now use BG15 Aqua to add shading accents. Remember which side is the light side and which side is the shadow side. Remember where you placed your cup or object to help you remember? In this slide, the left side of the stamped image is the shadowed side and the right is where the “light” is coming in from. Go back to BG10 and blend in the areas you accented with BG15, again in circular motions.
Step 12: Add the last bit of dark accents using BG49 Duck Blue. Now go back to BG15 and blend in the areas you accented with BG 49.
Step 13: Wow! Now it is time to color in the blossoms with RV21 Light Pink.
Step 14: Now add your shadow accents with RV23 Pure Pink. Go back over with RV21 to blend.
Step 15: RV04 Shock Pink is next. Go back over with RV23 to blend.
Step 16: Last, use RV29 Crimson to apply a touch of dark accent and color in portions of the berries. Go back over these areas with RV04 to blend.
Step 17: Finished blossoms should have depth and shading and include light areas. One last step is to take Copic “Ciao” or “Sketch” marker in BV31 Pale Lavender and line around the edges of the stamped image to give it an extra bit of light shadow.
Step 18: Again, if you turn your cardstock over, you should see how the marker colors have saturated through all the way to the back. Nice blending!
Step 19: Time to pull it all together. Choose coordinating background cardstock and papers, buttons, and a word stamp. Here I used Hero Arts “Hello Girlfriend” C2722 rubber stamp, stamped with the Memento Tuxedo Black ink pad. I also used my Oval and Scalloped Oval Nestabilities dies to cut out and imboss my image and backing using my Cuttlebug. Step 20: Don’t forget to add a little bling! Here I used Crystal Stickers Elements in dark Turquoise (Style #1945).
Step 21: Ta Da!!! And here is the finished card ;-) Beautiful smooth blended rich colors. That is what I absolutely love about Copic Markers! You will never be able to get the same effect using regular markers.
