My hubby has v kindly offered to buy me a new camera for my birthday - but there are so many on the market and I am getting bamboozled by all the jargon !
So I would simply like to know which camera you all use and which you would upgrade to given the chance.
I would need something that can take clear pictures of my cards and of course it would need a fast response time so I can get pictures of the kids and family shots too !
Thanks in advance girls for your help !

I have a Panasonic Lumix point & shoot for my cards & other shots when I'm on the go....and a Nikon D3000 for photo shoots..
Dear Suzanne, My husband has been dealing with camera's for 60+ years, used to be part of his job to photograph things for a steel company research lab, and so he has had several camera's over our married life of almost 50 years.
I suggest that you get the best camera you can for your money. At the present time he has A Nikon 3500 digital camera.
It has all the best bells and whistles, and he has taken wonderful pictures with it. It comes with an instructional video which he has viewed time after time to learn from. He was strictly a film camera man till he got this digital one, and so he has had to learn from scratch as well, and is still learning by doing.
The Nikon is the camera of choice, he has had Nikon film camera's, and he prefer's Nikon over the other ones. Also there are several excellent len's for them. He got his latest camera at Best Buy, best deal at the time. He has a short focal length lens, and also a wide angle lens as well. If you have any questions feel free to contact me directly and he can answer any questions you might have.
Good luck with your choice and Happy Picture taking. Sincerely, Judy Lanning
Hi,
I would agree with Judy, get the best you can afford. My husband and I both have Nikon cameras and have moved from film to digital. Currently we have a D200 and a D300 - both good and we use as our standard lens a zoom 16 - 85mm which covers most situations except really close-up. I tend to use this for photographing my cards as no matter what size I can zoom in or out to get them in the frame. Only drawback with Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras is size and weight mine won't fit in my handbag (but then I don't have a large bag!). If you go for a DSLR you may wish to look at the VR (vibration reduction) lenses as if, like us, you can't hold a camera as steady as you used to then this helps to reduce camera shake to a certain extent.
Whatever you go for enjoy it - photography is brilliant hobby and if you look at some of the photo sites on the web there's so much creative talent in the world.
Best wishes
Jan

I have been looking at the Nikon D3100 with an 18-55mm VR lens although I have to admit that I really have no idea where to start !

Hi Suzie. I had two Nikon Coolpix-not happy with them at all. I did A LOT of talking, research, etc--and finally decided on the Canon Elph Powershot 310. I LOVE IT!!! I wanted: something that fit my budget (had to be $ 200 or less...); good zoom (I only had 4x-this has 8--and does 8 well-unlike the Nikon where if you went past 2 1/2 forget it!), it's quick (I take a lot of cat photos-no kiddos but they may as well be! Lol!), the software automatically rotates the photos for you when you upload them (awesome feature!) and I've had to do very little editing (other than cropping)--lighting always seems to be right on, colors are true-photos are crisp. I wanted a point and shoot to fit in my purse. SOMEDAY...I will upgrade to a bigger camera with fancy zoom lens...but for now-for what I want and do---this is perfect! HTH--Blessings, Sharon
