The Social Season was alarge part of life in the 19th Century. This included balls, polo games, afternoon tea parties, dinner parties and many other lavish events.
When a lady attended a ball she carried a little card that fitted into the palm of her hand with a pencil attached. The card was like a little booklet and was beautifully decorated on the outside. Inside was a list of the dances to be performed throughout the evening and a space for a gentleman to place his name to request a particular dance. It was typical for a cord to be attached so the lady could slip it over her wrist or attach it to her gown. Dance cards appear to have originated in 18th century, but their use first became widespread in 19th century Vienna.
Ball gowns were very elaborate article of clothing very lavish in their design and delicately trimmed with pearls, sequins lace and beautiful embroidery. A ball gown was always long and covered the ankle with a full skirt.
Our scattering sweetness swap for September is pearls, rhinestones and sequins. How you present your items is up to you but think about having a go at making a replica dance card, they are fun to make; 3” x 4” is a good size, otherwise make a card or tag or pocket using the Social Season as your theme in which to place a selections of pearls, sequins, rhinestones or other sparkly items for your partner.
This month we are trying a shorter sign up period so sign-ups are open until the 7th of September and partners will be posted on the 8th.
I hope you will join me for September.
Warm regards
Karen
