Paper Craft Planet

Paper Crafting, Rubber Stamping, Scrapbooking, and more

Welcome to this week’s Fran*tage Friday project, sponsored by Stampendous! Each week, one of the Paper Craft Planet Supernovas shows off some fabulous Stampendous stamps and products in a special project.

I created this fun project with the holiday season in mind. It uses the Merry Snowman set, shrink plastic, and glass ornaments to make a unique holiday keepsake. I think this is a great project for the family to do together--maybe too late for this holiday season, but definitely one to keep in mind for next year . . .

I started by stamping the snowman image on a piece of shrink plastic. Since my image was a snowman, I used an opaque white plastic, but you can use any of the different varieties of shrink plastic. I stamped the image using black StazOn ink and colored it with Copic markers. You can also use regular permanent markers, like Sharpies, to color on the shrink plastic. Just remember that the inks in markers like both of these brands will interact with and remove or blur the StazOn, so don’t color too close to the edge of the inked image!

After coloring the image, I cut it out with regular scissors. I used a small hole punch to make a hole at the top of the ornament, then tied a piece of regular white thread through the hole. You’ll use this thread to suspend the snowman inside the ornament.

I removed the top from a glass ornament and carefully rolled the cut shrink plastic piece to insert it into the ornament. With all of its irregular shaped edges, this one was kind of tricky to squeeze inside the ornament, so I’d suggest starting with a little simpler shape for your first try at this! Since the image was large, it was a little curled up at the bottom once it was inside the ornament, which isn’t a problem since it will shrink when heated. Be sure to have the thread hanging on the outside of the ornament before heating it.

I heated the ornament in my oven, following the directions on the shrink plastic package and let it cool. Once it had cooled, I used some glue dots to secure the thread to the top of the ornament.

For a little sparkle, I poured some champagne crushed glass glitterinto the ornament. This has such a pretty sparkle! I put the ornament’s top back in place and decorated it with a little ribbon and a brown wooden button and it was good to go!

Very Nice Lori, love Christmas not so much lately since my grand parents and Mom. Since it was one of the favorites they like to celebrate... Love the Snowman. I didn't have copic markers. ( I'm a thiftyy kinda dude) does Rose pencil's or what's another alternative that you can recommand? The Red ribbon an button just adds a special touch.. TFS..

Hi Rj--if you don't have Copic markers, you can use regular permanent markers, like the Sharpie or Bic brand.  Depending on the kind of shrink plastic you use, you may be able to use colored pencils on it.  The opaque white I used has a very slick surface that pencils wouldn't work on, but I know that some of the other kinds of shrink plastic work well with colored pencils.

Thanks for the great idea. I love shrink plastic. I made ornament to be added to some of my cards. You know just alittle something for someone. I find that you can color with color penciles and plain old crayons. Note: yours color will be brighter after shrinking.

Happy New Year to ALL and looking forward to a super duper crafty new year! :0) Smiles

So glad everyone enjoyed the shrink plastic ornament idea!  I hope you'll share your version on PCP if you try it out!
