Faux Antique Metal Buttons

 by Wendy Price

Hi everyone! Wendy Price here and today I’m going to share with you a tutorial for creating faux antique buttons. I love the look of metal antique buttons on my papercraft projects, but the buttons can get costly. With embossing powder and stamps, you can create your own buttons that will look the expensive antique metal buttons.

Supplies Needed:

  • Buttons (color doesn’t matter since they’ll be covered with embossing powder)
  • Embossing Powder
  • Versamark Ink
  • Stamps
  • Pliers

Instructions:

1. Holding button with pliers, press into Versamark Ink. (The dirty ink pad won’t effect the end results. I keep a separate ink pad for projects like this and frantage. )

2. Dip into button directly into the pot of embossing powders. Tap off the extra embossing powder. Heat emboss while holding the button carefully with the pliers.Repeat these steps building up the layers of embossing powder to 3-4.  (note: if you dip the button  back into the pot while the embossing powder is still molten, the embossing powder will stick to the hot melted EP and you can skip the additional step of adding Versamark). Be careful not to heat too long at one spot or the embossing powder will drip.

3. While the final layer of embossing powder is still melted, press into a stamp design. Lift off after a few seconds and check out your design. If you are unhappy with the impression you achieved simply reheat the button and melt the embossing powder again.

And here are your finished faux antique buttons. You can experiment with different colors and styles of embossing powder to achieve a variety of results.

Very cool technique - and a great way to use some of the "ugly" buttons I have! Tfs

Ok, just beyond cool, Wendy! I didn't even notice that this button was done that way...you are just rocking awesome!  (wearing my WP originals embossed earrings today! They're definitely on my faves list!). Sharing this everywhere tomorrow!

Oh I've just tried this and it was so easy, and the result is fantastic! Thanks for sharing Wendy! Just a tip (from experience of course) - don't touch the end of the tweezers/pliers until they are cold!  :-(
