Ah, handsome George - he was a pound puppy. He had the body of a lab and face of an English Springer Spaniel - white stripe down his nose and all. He was a big guy too. George - he looked so sad - sort of a George Goble look. Sydney just seemed to fit too and he would answer to Syd. Since he was a Texas dog - he needed three names and he was so laid back - Clyde seemed to fit too. He had a nickname - Bubba or Bubbie too which he answered to also. He was laid back - he would pretend to be asleep and wait for a squirrel or whatever to come near him and he would spring on them. He scared 3 mice to death doing that! It was light he gave them a heart attack!. He loved to go visit older people around our neighborhood. He was going to be the Spark Park Official Dog - he died suddenly of liver cancer a week before the dedication of the playground and park. He was there when we planted trees - ate most of the cookies. He went with me to gather donations and all kinds of stuff. He even went in the port a pottie with me when I had to suddenly go pottie! That was some chore getting him in there with me! George loved flowers. If he was out in the backyard and happened to walk by and see that I had brought home flowers - he would want to come and smell them. He would smell flower beds on our walks too. People thought he would crush them but he just smelled them. My husband had a rose garden and George was right there to watch hiim plant, water, etc. and smell them! He did eat my chocolate mint plant though. Well, my big guy is wanting his supper. So, I had better go take care of that. Maybe it is just as well we never had kids - I spend too much time with the dogs! Oh, yeah, one other quit George story. My husband used to teach 9th graders. One of the kids would say at least twice a month that his dog ate his homework. So, one time I was correcting papers for Mike and the kid turned in his paper but didn't get any of the answers right - he really didn't think we checked them - he wanted credit that he turned it in. I don't even think the kid had his own name spelled right. Well, George like paper as well as flowers almost, so I wadded it in a big ball and he snarfed it down. So, the next day Mike handed back papers and the kid asked where his was demanding credit for turning it in. Mike just said the dog ate it and walked on by. He was shocked and never used that excuse again. The kid did ask one of the other kids who asked Mike about it and he said I fed it to the dog and he ate it, enough said! It was pretty funny at the time and you sort of had to know the duffus kid too.
My big guy is really doing fine with all his problems. His lupus is in remission and we give him allergy shots! Such a long way from being born in a ditch, in Texas, after a car hit his mother and she then had 10 puppies in the ditch. A vet took her and did surgery on her and some foster families took the puppies and bottle fed them from day one! So, he is a very big baby! The people who fostered him named him Mighty Mark McQuire as they were all born on one of those days he broke a record. Murph was the biggest pup too. When we adopted him they had all these little baseball toys, a baseball collar on him and such. We were calling him Mark but our neighbor protested since her son's name was Mark! So, after several episodes his first few days - he became Murphy (Murphy's Law) Mitchell (also a hurricane at that time and Murph was quite a whirl wind) McQuire Robinson! He was just a bit shaky on his legs earlier this week and that made me think of our other two we had that died previously. Maggie Jo was an English Bull dog mix and she lived to be 17 1/2 and then George Sydney Clyde died at 11 1/2 6 months after Maggie of liver cancer.
