3d188 – Creating a Custom Gift Box!

Hi everyone and welcome to another 3d challenge!  Today I’m showing you how to create your own custom-sized gift box and all you need is a score board, two sheets of 12×12 pattern paper, tape runner and embellishments!

The idea to make my own boxes evolved because I needed a certain size box and had nothing on hand.  This simple scoring formula takes care of many different size boxes.  Also, a custom designed box might just be better than the modest gift inside!

My sample box size is 6″ x 6″ with 3″ sides using 12″x12″ Prima paper.

Here’s a view of the box top and bottom.

Here’s how we construct the box starting with bottom first:

For a 6″ square box that has 3″ sides, the formula for scoring is as follows:

6″ + 3″ + 3″ (totalling 12″) or Box Size plus two times the height of the sides.

To create the side flaps, cut at the 3″ and 9″ cutting lines on two sides only.  Apply tape runner to 3 sides of the center section on two sides as per pattern photo and affix each flap to create the box shape.

For the lid to fit properly, you must add 1/8″ to the size of your box.  In my example, a 6″ box bottom will now become a 6-1/8″ box lid.

To make everything fit correctly, I scored at 2-7/8″ and at 9″.  However, I trimmed away 1/8″ on the 9″ sides for everything to be square.  If you scored all sides at 2-7/8″ your lid will be 6-1/4″ which is too large.

I hope you will try this box formula to create your own custom boxes with your score board.  I used the Martha Stewart score board as it has 1/8″ increments.
