GIVEAWAY and Dreamweaver Tutorial Thursday: Sculpted Paste

Hello and welcome to my first ever Paper Craft Planet Tutorial!  The technique I will be working with is called SCULPTED PASTE.

And I am quite excited to be sharing this Dreamweaver technique tutorial with you. Each time I teach this technique in a class it definitely is the WOW technique so hopefully this online tutorial will have the same effect on you!

For this card we will be using the following Dreamweaver products, which all can be found at your local papercrafting store or online at Stencil With Style:

LL559 Horses stencil

LM244 Happy Father's Day stencil

Glossy Black Paste

Palette Knife

LM2010 Paste Spreader

Metallic F/X: Moonstone, Cocoa, Gold Dust and Amber Glow

1/2" Stencil Brush

To begin, start with a 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece of ivory cardstock scored in the middle to form an A2 card.

Center the LM244 Happy Father's Day stencil about a 1/2" from the top of the card and completely tape around all 4 edges of the stencil with removable tape. And since I'm working directly on the final card, I usually cover any exposed areas with post-it-notes just in case I get messy with my paste!

Note that because of the long lines above and below the word HAPPY, I adjust my stencil so that I drag my paste perpendicular to the long lines rather than parallel to them to avoid having my paste spreader or palette knife getting caught in the long lines (technically called "bridges").

Remember to let gravity be your friend when pasting. Don't put downward pressure on the paste to avoid "seepage" under the stencil. Just drag or pull the paste towards you lightly skimming your paste spreader or palette knife over the top of the stencil. (A couple of times of doing this the "wrong" way and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about!)

Carefully remove 3 sides of the tape and unhinge the stencil, pulling up the 4th piece of tape up with the stencil. Set aside to dry or place on a WARM (read WARM, barely on) griddle to dry.

Now let's turn to sculpting of the horses:

Starting with a 1-7/8" x 5-1/2" piece of rust colored cardstock, tape the LM559 Horses stencil completely over the piece of cardstock:

and apply a smooth layer of Black Glossy paste just like you did for the Happy Father's Day stencil:

Now using your palette knife, take a pea size of glossy paste:

and lighty tap the paste over small sections of the pasted horses (key word LIGHTLY so that you avoid "seepage")

Continue until you have completely covered the entire image, picking up small pea size amounts of paste as necessary:

Again, remove the stencil using the "hinge technique" described above and set aside to dry (or again, use a griddle). The time will vary depending on how thick your paste layer is.

Once it is dry, reposition the clean stencil over the dry image:

Using the Stamp & Stick pad and the finger dauber, load the dauber with the glue by daubing heavily into the glue pad and then lightly tapping over the stencil openings. Remove the stencil and lightly heat-emboss the image until the glue is tacky (5-10 seconds).

Again, reposition the stencil and brush on Metallic F/X powders of your choice:

Remove the stencil and using a large soft stencil brush, brush off excess F/X powder:

To finish trim to 5-1/8" wide and layer onto a piece of 2" x 5-1/4" piece of brown cardstock and then to pasted A2 card.
