Before I get started on today’s tutorial its time to announce the winner from Loretta’s . Congratulations Joanne!!! Be sure to email Pam at firstname.lastname@example.org) with your address and she’ll make sure the LG730 Peacock Stencil is on its way to you. Congratulations!
Here is what you will need:
I’m working with a discarded cigar box. To prep the surface, I gave the entire cigar box a good sanding. If you’re working with a new piece of wood from the craft store, this step may not be necessary. My box had a logo painted on it and I needed to sand it off.
You’ll want to give some consideration when choosing your stencil to the detail of the stencil. Be sure that your wood burning tips will fit in the stencil openings. If you choose a design with large open areas, like this butterfly, you’ll be spending a good amount of time wood burning.
There are two ways you can do this. You can use the stencil to sketch out the design in pencil on your box and then after removing the stencil wood burn. Another way is to leave the stencil in place as you wood burn. I don’t have the steadiest hand, so I choose to leave the stencil in place when wood burning. NOTE: I do have to note, please be extremely careful when wood burning with the stencil in place. Not only can it get hot and burn you, but you can also bend your stencil.
I started with the thinest wood burning tip (tapered point tip) that I had and traced in the design, running the hot tip right up to the stencil. Next I switched over to a larger tip to fill in the design. For the larger areas I used a mini flow point, flow point and shading point.
When I had my design burned in, I darkened the wood with an antiquing glaze. After wiping the excess glaze off and allowing it to dry, I gave it a few coats of varnish.
To finish off the inside, I embossed the butterfly onto a sheet of Coredinations cardstock. A quick sanding to the surface makes the design pop.
