Giveaway and Dreamweaver Thursday Tutorial: Molten Magic with Laura Drahozal

Hi, this is Laura Drahozal from the Dreamweaver team once again. Today, I am going to show you how to use your Dreamweaver Stencils and Paste to create the look that we call “Molten Magic.”  It is pretty simple.  Here is my supply list (of course, you will make your own choices):

Dreamweaver Stencil LL 3004

Dreamweaver Gold Metallic Embossing Paste

Dreamweaver Metallic FX in these fall colors:  Kimono Red, Amber Glow, Goldfinch, Gold Dust, Eye of the Tiger, Ivy Garden, Kiwi and Cocoa.

Paste Spreader

Small Stencil Brush

Removable Tape

Cardstock

Heat Gun

Here are the instructions:

1)  Tape the stencil over the cardstock.  I tape it directly to my craft mat, but any hard surface will do.  Make sure that you used the removable tape and tape it all the way around.  You will need to leave the first piece taped all the way across the top, to create a “hinge” for later.  You can also dog ear the other edges of tape so that they are easier to remove.  Here is a picture of what mine looked like after the taping.

2)  Use your Paste Spreader to remove the paste from the jar, and leave a thick “bead” of it across the tape on the top of the stencil.

3)  Use your Paste Spreader at a 45 degree angle from the stencil to pull the paste across it.  I put my finger in the crook of the spreader for more control.  I would also suggest that you feel the spreader touching the brass stencil all the way down.  You aren’t pressing, just touching the stencil as you pull the paste across.

4)  Put any extra paste back in the jar.  Carefully remove the dog eared tape from the three sides of the stencil.  You will lift the stencil as if the remaining tape were a hinge.  Pull it off the cardstock.

5)  Using your stencil brush, drop Metallic FX colors on the pasted stencil.

6)  Flick off the excess powder over the garbage can.

7)  Heat the top of the paste with the heat gun.  It will bubble up in random patterns.  The wetter the paste is and the closer you are, the larger the bubbles will be.  Be careful not to get too close, though.  I burned my first project!

8)  When I am done heating (I know, because the whole project had been bubbled), I remove the heat gun, wait a couple of beats, and then carefully and gently tap on the bubbles.  This is not necessary, but I like the tighter look that it gives to the rippled areas.

9)  Let the project cool for just a few minutes.  Then, wrap a Swiffer refill around your finger and gently rub away the excess powder. 

Any powder that doesn’t come up this way can be removed using a white plastic eraser.
