I hope you will join me for this really fun Monday tutorial project! It's an expandable portfolio with pockets for bookmarks, etc., and a slot for a note pad and pencil. The construction part is easy; it is the decorating that takes a little time, but you can make that as simple or ornate as you like! And there's a bonus! With this style of construction, when the notepad is empty, you can simply replace it so your portfolio can live a longer life!
You can find a picture of the outside (plain jane!) and a video tutorial in our tutorials section!
Hope you like it! :) Happy birthday, Susanna!

Comment by Ruza Rebel on November 3, 2012 at 8:10pm Deb ... I created a portfolio today, and it will be up on my blog tomorrow. Only correction I needed to make was on Step 2. Had to start scoring for fold at 8-3/4" vs. 8-1/2", then scored every 1/8" 3-more times.
I made my outside look like a clutch purse. Will share the link tomorrow. ;o)
Comment by Ruza Rebel on October 28, 2012 at 5:06pm Thank you Deb! I will try this tomorrow after Katie goes to school and let you know. I really appreciate your doing this! ;o)
Comment by Deb Felts on October 28, 2012 at 2:48pm Let me know if something doesn't make sense! :)
Comment by Deb Felts on October 28, 2012 at 2:45pm No problems, it's all good! I originally thought it was better and easier to demonstrate than to describe, but I can certainly do both. Next time hopefully I'll have more time and be able to do both still and moving pictures.
Ruza, hopefully since you've seen the video, these will make sense without still pictures. (I did this from memory and without rechecking measurements, so it might be wise to try the first three steps with copy paper first! When I have more time, I'll double-check measurements, but right now I've got another deadline to meet!)
Step 1:
With an 8.5 x 11 inch card stock, placed in landscape orientation in the score tool: score at 4, 4 1/4, and 8 1/2. The left edge of this piece will be the bottom flap of the album and will be visible inside and out, so adhere washi tape to both sides. Adhere washi tape to the top only of the right edge and then punch with a circle or tab punch to make the pocket notch. Apply score tape to the short sides and along the score line of this flap so that it can later be adhered to form the pocket.
Step 2:
With another 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of card stock, landscape orientation in the scoring tool: score at 4 1/4, 4 1/2, and 8 1/2, then also at 8 5/8, 8 3/4, and 8 7/8. Those last four scores will form the "roll" of the flap that shapes the front cover.
Step 3:
With the first piece folded into a "z" fold (zig-zag style) and the washi tape pocket-notched edge on top, tuck the left edge of the remaining piece into place all the way into the fold and adhere the pocket edge of piece one to the left flap of piece 2.
Step 4:
With a 4 3/8 x 8.5 inch piece of card stock, use the word window punch to create a slot wide enough to accommodate the back of your paper tablet. The slot should be slightly to the left rather than centered, so that with the tablet in place, a pencil will fit to the right of it. Set aside.
Step 5:
Cut card stock and designer paper the height (top-to-bottom) you desire, at least 5 inches wide (left-to-right), to create the pen or pencil storage. Score approximately 3/4 inch from the right edge, then each 1/8 inch for several scores until the paper will curve over your chosen writing instrument. Align the right edge of this piece with the right edge of the slot-punched card stock, approximately 2 1/2 inches from the top (just below the slot). Adhere this piece, leaving the curved portion free and making sure that the pen or pencil fits snugly underneath. Trim the left edge even with the card stock base. Adhere to the appropriate section of the album (the flat section to the left of the cover flap), but be sure to leave the portion below the slot free for the tablet to slide in and out smoothly and freely!
Step 6:
Decorate as desired!
Comment by Ruza Rebel on October 28, 2012 at 10:03am I saw the video Jane Stevenson!!! Did not mean to affend anyone!!! I don't have a scor-pal so it's a little hard for me not seeing the direction written down!!!
It's a great project, but I guess I'll make something else for Katie's teachers/bus drivers.
Enjoy your weekend.
