Paper Crafting, Rubber Stamping, Scrapbooking, and more

Welcome to Monday everyone!  It’s Taylorhere today, sharing a quick and easy way to use your die cut scraps to make a one layer card.  Of course, your final card doesn’t have to be just one layer – you can make it however you’d like!  Take a look at my finished card, so you know what I have in mind:

I have a serious love of the quick, one layer card.  They are great for gift sets for people, easy to mail (no extra postage), and fun to make.  The key is create depth on them, so they are still visually interesting.  That’s where the negative of your die cut shapes comes in!  I have seen lots of people do this, so please don’t think this is my original idea.  But someone was kind enough to pass the knowledge on to me (so I’m paying it forward!).  For the longest time I threw away the scraps of card stock around my die cut shapes, which always felt like a waste.  Now, here’s what I do instead:

Lay your scrap on the card base, wherever you would like the shape to be.  To keep the card base clean, I use post-it notes to hold it in place.  The piece I am using here happens to have lots of excess card stock around it, but sometimes I don’t.  That’s when the post-it notes are super handy!  The nifty oval shape I’m using is from the newest  set of dies, called Decorative Plaques, from Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps.

For this step, you can choose to add as little or as much as you’d like.  I started by inking up a background stamp (Friendship Script), stamping it off once on scrap paper, and then stamping it right on to my card base.  Then I sponged on two colors of distress ink, starting from off near the post-it notes and dragging the ink towards the center of the die cut space.  Finally I added a silhouette image from the Nature Silhouettesset near the bottom of the space.

When you remove the post-it notes and scrap card stock, you are left with a beautiful image!  You can then add whatever you’d like around it – I chose to add a sentiment and another floral silhouette.  Stamping over the die cut area you’ve created helps add a faux-layer to the card!

This technique is not limited to just shapes – you could use die cut butterflies, clouds, border shapes….anything, really!  I hope you’ve been inspired to create a card of your own!

I had seen this earlier, and thought it was from a catalog I rec'd in the mailbox today, and search that catalog from front to back and couldn't find it.  Of course, it was this e-mail...I am so happy to find it b/c I am going to try this after I get caught up with my DT duties.  Thank you for sharing this information/tutorial.
